The Las Vegas Convention Center, one of the biggest convention facilities in the world, helps to set a beat for the city due to its very active schedule. Although, most of the busiest conventions take place during the quieter times of the year, they still nearly fill all of the hotels in Las Vegas. Many of the bigger hotels offer their own very large convention areas, meaning that by 2009, Las Vegas will have more than 9 million square feet of meeting space, with less than half of that being the Las Vegas Convention Center. In 2004 the center had an expansion creating a total of 3.2 million square feet (roughly 295,000 square meters). Another expansion is taking place which will create an additional 500,000 square feet. Except during major holidays, there are almost always numerous conventions taking place throughout Las Vegas. Some have smaller turnouts of only a couple dozen participants but there are also a few larger conventions with over 100,000 attendees. Availability is limited during the larger conventions, and generally, the prices of accommodation go up. If possible, avoid Las Vegas Travel during peak convention periods. Where is the Las Vegas Convention Center? The existing spot first opened in the late 1950’s and has grown numerous times since then. Originally positioned directly across from the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, the convention center not stretches beyond the Desert Inn Road to the south. The Monorail system now makes reaching the center possible from almost every hotel on the Strip. |
