Vacation in Las Vegas

If you're planning on visiting Las Vegas, it pays to do your research.  If you book things last minute you can end up shelling out up to double the price, and if you aren't aware of free services (food is sometimes offered free/cheap at the hotel you’re staying at, and Vegas has excellent free shuttles and trams) you can end up paying for things that you could have gotten for free.

Las Vegas Resorts

Las Vegas has over 164 resorts and lodges.  If you'd like to relax when away from the casinos, try the Cancun Resort.  With rooms ranging from $95-395 USD, there's something to suit everyone.  The Cancun is equipped with a pool with a waterfall, waterslides for the kiddies.  Equipped with a restaurant and free daily shuttles to and from the Strip (which is conveniently located nearby), the Cancun is a great choice for those who are craving a true resort experience.  If you'd like to be a little closer to the action, try the Meridian Resort Retreat.  It's located right on the Strip and is equipped with two swimming pools and poolside cabanas.  The Meridian also has a fitness centre with squash courts.  Meridian offers guests a chance to experience true luxury, and it's a hit with tourists, often touted as one of the best resorts in the area.

If you're looking for something a little more affordable (the Meridian can cost up to $400 USD and beyond/person/night), Las Vegas also offers many affordable, good quality hotels.  One constant favourite is the Tropicana, where rooms cost an average of $40 on weekdays and $70 on weekends (although prices tend to go up during peak season).  The Tropicana's large swimming pool, excellent restaurant and convenient location on the Strip make this hotel a great value for your dollar.

Las Vegas Attractions

One thing's for sure: you'll never be bored in Vegas.  If you aren't into gambling and aren't interested in the shows, there are plenty of other things to do.  Be sure to check out Madame Tussaud's world famous wax museum.  Tussaud's has over 100 celebrities on display and it is completely interactive.  Pose, kiss and shake hands with any celebrity you want!

For a romantic evening, try the outdoor gondola ride, located in the outdoor Grand Canal.  Float down the river and take in the sites in an authentic gondola.  Rides run from Thursday to Sunday.  Although the gondola ride is shared, private rides can be arranged for an extra fee.

Other nearby points of interest include the Grand Canyon and daily helicopter rides around Nevada.  If you're into dinner theatre, be sure to check out Tony and Tina's wedding, located at the Rio all suite and casino.

Transportation in Las Vegas

Your hotel may offer free shuttle service from the airport, but if not, getting to the Strip is still relatively easy.  The McCarren International Airport offers various shuttle services to the Strip and beyond.  Shuttle service to the Strip costs an average of $8.00, downtown hotels cost $10.00 and off strip hotels cost $13.50.  Make sure to check beforehand there is a shuttle service to your hotel and try to book a reservation to save yourself some time at the airport.

If you'd like some flexibility while in town, you may want to consider renting a car.  Las Vegas has dozens of car rental establishments in the area, including big companies such as Avis and Enterprise.

When in the Strip, inquire about free trams and shuttle services. The Strip has 6 free trolleys and 2 free shuttle services that will bring you around the Strip and to various casinos.  It is definitely recommended that you take advantage of these services - they'll save you a ton of cash!  Las Vegas also has a monorail service that is efficient and affordable.
